Most beginner surfers and open water swimmers will have experienced currents but not many know how to spot them. In this course, you will learn the tools to analyze any beach and surf zone, develop a systematic approach to see patterns in a chaotic environment and understand how to avoid or use currents to your advantage as well as safely and calmly get out of them again.
If you are surfing/swimming in cold water, do you know about the cold water shock or the effects of the after-drop? In this course, we will raise your ocean awareness and help you to learn everything you need to know so you can go into the water with confidence.

About
In this course you will learn:
- How to spot currents
- Know how to use and get out of rips
- Know how to deal with Hypothermia, cold water shock, incapacitation and the after drop
- Understand how to analyse any surf / swim zone
- Learn about swell, waves, tides and rules of the line up
- Know how to accurately interpret surf forecasts
- What you need to know if you are swimming without a wetsuit in cold water
Once you finish the online training module you have the option to join our practical water safety module. During this practical session, we go to several different beaches and help you analyze your surf/swim zone before we enter the water to experience a real rip current and guide you safely out of it again.

After this course you will have an increased ocean and beach awareness and be able to accurately analyse your beach and swim/surf area so you can go into the water with confidence.
If you want to further boost your skills we would love to welcome you to our weekly water safety classes (1h) where you can develop your water confidence and safety skills on a regular basis under the supervision and guidance of a certified beach lifeguard and swim/surf instructor.
