Is Breathwork Safe in Water? Know the Risks

A calm sea can make breath-holding feel deceptively simple. You take a few deep breaths, slip beneath the surface, and suddenly want to see how far or how long you can go. But is breathwork safe in water? Only in the right setting, with the right kind of practice and close, trained supervision.

Breathwork can be brilliant for relaxation, focus and developing a more comfortable relationship with your breathing. In water, however, the stakes change. A breathing exercise that feels harmless on land can become dangerous if it encourages prolonged breath-holds, dizziness, overconfidence or a loss of awareness beneath the surface.

For swimmers, snorkellers and aspiring freedivers, the exciting answer is not to avoid breathwork altogether. It is to understand where dry-land practice ends, where water training begins, and why good safety systems are part of every amazing water-based experience.

Is breathwork safe in water? It depends on the practice

The word “breathwork” covers a wide range of methods. Gentle, steady breathing while floating calmly with an instructor nearby is very different from deliberate hyperventilation, extended breath-holds or underwater challenges with friends.

Many people use dry breathwork to settle nerves before a coastal swim, slow down after a busy week, or learn how the diaphragm and ribcage move. These practices can be useful when taught appropriately. But exercises designed to create intense sensations, such as rapid breathing, repeated deep breaths or long pauses after exhaling, should not be transferred into the water without expert guidance.

Breath-hold training is a specialist skill within freediving. It is not simply a test of willpower. Safe progression involves technique, relaxation, rescue awareness, carefully managed depth and distance, and an attentive buddy who is there solely to watch the person in the water.

The key point is straightforward: never treat water-based breathwork as a solo wellness exercise. Water removes your margin for error.

Why hyperventilating before a breath-hold is risky

Hyperventilation is one of the biggest dangers around breath-holding. It means breathing more than your body needs, often through fast or forceful deep breaths before going underwater.

People sometimes do it because they think it “loads up” the body with extra oxygen. In reality, healthy blood is already close to fully oxygenated during normal breathing. Hyperventilation mainly lowers carbon dioxide levels.

Carbon dioxide is not just waste gas. It plays a vital role in triggering the urge to breathe. When you artificially lower it, that warning signal can arrive later than it should. Oxygen may continue to fall without you feeling the need to breathe, potentially leading to a sudden loss of consciousness underwater. This is often called shallow-water blackout.

The frightening part is that it may happen quietly. A person can appear relaxed and capable moments before they black out. That is why “I feel fine” is never a safety plan, and why a friend swimming nearby is not the same as a dedicated, trained buddy.

Cold water adds another layer of challenge

Northern Ireland’s coastline offers spectacular snorkelling and freediving conditions, from clear coves to dramatic rock formations, but cold water has a real effect on the body. Entering chilly water can trigger an involuntary gasp and rapid breathing. If you are not settled before putting your face in, that response can make even basic breath control feel harder.

Cold can also increase stress, reduce dexterity and make it more difficult to recognise when you are becoming tired. Waves, current, poor visibility and the effort of swimming in a wetsuit can all raise the workload further. A breath-hold that felt comfortable in a warm pool or on the sofa is not a reliable measure of what will feel safe in open water.

This does not mean coastal water is off limits. It means conditions matter. Good instructors assess the site, weather, temperature, group ability and individual confidence before choosing what is appropriate. Sometimes the best call is a shorter session, more surface time, or keeping the focus on snorkelling rather than breath-hold performance.

What safe water-based breath training looks like

Safe training is not about chasing a number. It is about staying relaxed, building skills gradually and having a clear plan if something goes wrong.

In a properly run freediving session, participants are briefed on the risks before entering the water. They practise recovery breathing at the surface, learn communication signals, and work within limits suited to their experience. A competent buddy stays alert and close during each attempt, rather than doing their own dive at the same time.

There should also be a clear distinction between a fun snorkel and a breath-hold session. On a cave snorkel tour, for example, the priority is enjoying the scenery, moving comfortably through the water and following the guide’s instructions. It is not the moment to experiment with how long you can stay under.

The rules that should never be negotiated

Never practise breath-holds alone, whether in a pool, the sea, a lake or a bath. Never hyperventilate before entering the water. Never turn underwater distance, repeated dives or “who can stay down longest?” into a game.

Avoid breath-hold practice when you are cold, exhausted, unwell, dehydrated or affected by alcohol, recreational drugs or medication that can impair awareness. If the water is moving, visibility is poor or conditions are changing, choose the more conservative option.

Most importantly, your buddy must be actively watching you. Two people each doing their own underwater attempts do not make a safe pair. In freediving, one person dives while the other remains on the surface, focused and ready to assist.

Start on land, then learn in a controlled setting

If you are curious about breathwork because you want to feel calmer in the sea, begin with land-based instruction. Learning relaxed diaphragmatic breathing, posture and how to respond to the urge to breathe can build confidence without the immediate consequences of being underwater.

If your goal is freediving, take a structured course rather than learning from social media clips or copying a confident friend. A course gives you the chance to understand equalisation, safety, buddying and rescue skills alongside breath-hold technique. That fuller picture is what turns an interesting challenge into a sustainable sport.

A pool can be a useful training environment, but it is not automatically safe. The same rules apply there as they do in open water. Pools can create a false sense of security because the edge is close and the water is clear, yet blackout can still occur without warning.

Who should get advice before trying it?

Anyone with a history of fainting, seizures, heart conditions, lung conditions, panic attacks or uncontrolled asthma should speak to an appropriate medical professional before taking part in breath-hold or intensive breathwork activities. The same applies if you are pregnant, recovering from illness or injury, or taking medication that may affect consciousness, breathing or circulation.

This is not about excluding people from the water. It is about giving instructors the information they need and choosing an experience that matches your needs. For some people, a guided snorkel, coastal swim or paddleboarding session is the perfect way to enjoy the sea without making breath-holding the focus.

Let curiosity lead, not competition

Water has a way of making people want to push a little further. That curiosity can lead to extraordinary experiences when it is paired with knowledge, patience and the right people around you. If a breathing exercise leaves you light-headed, tingly, anxious or unusually euphoric, stop and return to normal breathing before going anywhere near the water.

The sea will still be there tomorrow. Build your confidence steadily, train with qualified professionals, and save the challenge for a setting designed to support it. That is how breathwork can complement your time in the water rather than compromise it.
